"The Comedy of Errors: A First Folio Frolic" This marked our first foray into the "original" way of doing Shakespeare: Except for individual script analysis sessions with SHAKESPERIMENT Lab Director James A. Bond, there were no rehearsals, no pre-set blocking and no director--only an on-stage Prompter t keep the cast " on point" in performance. When cast, each actor was instructed to NOT look at the play in its' entirety and to NOT talk to each other about their role or the plot. They were to go on stage only knowing their lines and the five words that preceded them (i.e. cues). Therefore, they had to use common sense and look for the clues embedded in Shakespeare's text to navigate their way on stage... just like their characters, they were "discovering" the plot (and each other) alongside the audience! To add our own "spin", the actors memorized two roles each, which made for 20 possible cast configurations--but did not know until they were standing on stage and an audience member chose the number that corresponded to that night's cast configuration which they would play that night. It was a rollicking and HUGELY successful venture for the actors, the theatre and the audience (although it was a bit humbling for our directors to be effectively rendered useless!) |

"Love's Labours Lost" Directed By: James Alexander Bond Presented at three different venues in two different towns over the course of three week-ends in July, this was the first production (of 7) in our 2009 Summer Festival Season. With additional original music created and performed by the cast, this vibrant and bittersweet production was the culmination of a 9 day rehearsal process that marked the stunning debut of "Company A"--our SHAKESPERIMENT LAB performers. Set against a backdrop of grafitti that contained inside jokes, the title of every show in the 2009 Summer Season and the names of key sponsors, the rain-soaked productions were well attended and enthusiastically received. |
