REACH FOR THE STARS "CAN DO!"®
Youth Acting Day Camp
Let us help your child find their “inner star”! In past years, an award-winning director lead kids in a “mock” tv commercial, a BBC tv star taught movement and speech, they learned basic mime technique from a trained mime and a Stage Combat expert showed them how to sword fight just like in the movie “Pirates of the Caribbean”! Our teachers are world class professionals working in their fields--no other NH camp offers this level of teaching professional. Campers work towards a special KID’S PERFORMANCE EVENING on the Theatre Under the Stars Main Stage, which will serve as a pre-show to the professional Main Stage evening show in which many of the kid camperas participate. Taught by working professionals from Toronto, New York, L.A. and London for over a decade, thousands of kids and parents all over North America have raved about these workshops. Thrilling, inspirational, challenging and fun, these performance-based classes will have your kids saying, “I can do that!” with every film, commercial, tv show or theatrical performance they see!
They’ll gain confidence, listening skills and collaboration as well as life-long friends and mentors when they “reach for the stars” (and learn from the stars) performing under the stars this summer.
Our youth camp is aimed at young performers who want the opportunity to work with renowned theatre professionals in a fun, supportive and structured environment. Our goal is to make performance exciting, interactive and full of adventure. To that end, our classes are geared towards maximum participation by each student in each class, with very little “lecturing” and a whole lot of active learning. The emphasis is on “doing” rather than “watching”. The culmination of the camp is the performance of monologues, sonnets and scenes that each camper has worked on in class.
It’s an exciting, adventurous way to explore the world of theatre, Shakespeare and the classics in a “no pressure” atmosphere led by some of the nation’s best acting teachers and trained Shakespearean actors.
In the four hour block each day, campers will have 1-2 core classes, with 1-2 hours left aside for rehearsals for their Kid Camp Performance of scenes and selections from "THE TEMPEST".
No auditions necessary—we “take all comers” on a space available basis. We welcome minorities and those with physical disabilities.
Workshops and Classes
The 2012 camps will have all of the core components known as our “trademark”:
**Interactive, participatory classes with an emphasis on “doing” rather than “watching”.
**Core Classes: Stage Combat/Fencing, Acting Shakespeare, Theatre Games, Voice, Speech
**A mandatory part of the workshops is that Kid Campers will be treated to chaperoned evening outings at the Main Stage performances of "Hamlet" and "The Winter's Tale" during camp.
**All classes progress towards a Special “CAN DO” Kid Camp Performance of scenes and monologues from “The Tempest” on Saturday August 11th, 2012, which will be done as a “double-feature”: First see the kids do their own thing, then stick around to watch the professional actors in the FINAL show of our 2012 Summer Festival, “Comedy of Errors”! Two shows in one night followed by graduation celebration and POTLUCK PARTY!!
SPLIT CLASSES AND YOUNGER KIDS ACCEPTED!
This year, the minimum age for participation is age 5. Classes will be divided into two age groups: 5-10 and 11-16. All students will have access to the same classes and will participate in our KID CAMP SHOW, but the classes will be divided to accommodate for the different ways in which younger campers process info and learn. All campers will come together for the rehearsal workshop of the KID CAMP SHOW that concludes each day
But don't take our word for it--here's what the KIDS have to say...
"I enjoyed every part...I reached and found my inner self. It's made me really want to be an actress when I grow up." (Devon, 14, Campton NH)
"Stage Combat was fun and exciting. It was cool to see the adult actors have sword fights on stage and the next day we're doing it!" (Wes, 10, Medfield, MA)
"Camp ruled! I'm going to miss you guys. I loved rehearsing the Kid Camp show with the kids and Main Stage with all of the professional actors. I get to see what my life is going to be like when I'm a professional actress!" (Riley, 10, Thornton, NH)
"I liked it all! They told us that there were no wrong answers and we were free to use our imaginations and do whatever we want. " (Taylor, 9, New Paltz, NY)
"When I am a pro ski racer/actor/newscaster I'll get to use everything I learned here. I loved stage combat, stage fencing, acting, the shows..but my favorite part was having to show fear on stage--because that's not me--but I acted it and got a lot of satisfaction out of doing something new!" (Luke, 14, Campton, NH)
"I loved every class and every teacher. I want to be an actor when I grow up and loved my roles in the shows and learning my lines!" (Sarah, 11, Campton, NH)
"I loved sword fighting and acting classes. This was so much fun!" (Michael, 13, Waterville Valley, NH)
"The best part was learning more about Shakespeare. It's a really cool thing to do and not boring at all!" (Noah, 11, Cambridge, MA)
